Guarding the Chauseč
(The 95th Rifles in action at Waterloo, Guarding the Chauseč)

Size : 39” X 28”
Medium : Oil on Canvas
The painting 'Guarding the Chauseè' shows a company of the 1/95th Rifles occupying and defending a sand pit just across the road from the critically important strong point of La Haye Sainte Farmhouse on the battlefield of Waterloo.
On the road leading from Charleroi to Brussels via Waterloo, lies a badly damaged 9lb field gun, belonging to the Royal Horse Artillery. The gun and its crew have fallen victim to French counter-battery fire.
The time is mid afternoon, just after the first main French attack, by the Comte d’Erlon’s 1st Corps, had been successfully repelled. The Riflemen, whilst subjected to furious enemy artillery fire, are providing mutual support to the King's German Legion, who are frantically defending the Farmhouse. French Infantry and Artillery can be seen away in the distance in the area of La Belle Alliance, Napoleon’s command post for the majority of the day.
