A pastel painting of John Cabbot's ship, The Matthew, in heavy seas, heading west across the North Atlantic.
The ship is 'hove to' with sails and rudder set in such a way as to allow it to keep headed into the waves without forward movement in order to weather out the store as comfortably as possible for both crew and ship.
